Customer Reviews

This is a reliable device for data backup and portability.
Date: 2007-09-13 | Rating: 5
This Iomega Super DVD External Drive we are using for business data backup and portability. We have customers with different production environments ranging Windows XP SP-2 to Windows 2000. To support production we have few test machines setup according to production environment. Using this single Iomega Super DVD External Drive we don't need internal drivers for each machine. It is also very convenient to bring data at home. After you finish your job at home you can easily bring it back to work. So far the unit is working fine no problems. We are not using this unit very extensive just few times a week. Potentially we are planing saving money on computer orders without internal drivers.

GREAT BURNER, FAST & EASY
Date: 2007-11-12 | Rating: 5
I USED THIS PRODUCT ON MY LAPTOP, EASY PLUG AND PLAY, BURNER IS RELIABLE AND EASY TO USE ON ANY PC, PEOPLE THAT COMPPLAIN ABOUT IT MAYBE ARE NOT USING THE RIGHT SOFTWARE AND RIGHT DVDS, I HAVE TRIED ALL KINDS OF DIFFERENT MEDIA DVDS AND SOME OF THEM ARE CHEAPLY MADE & WILL HAVE GLITCHES, THIS BURNER WORKS LIKE A CHARM

Great dvd Burner

I am not sure why the other review is so bad, but let me tell you, this is one awesome dvd drive. I have not had one bad disk made with this unit....If you are trying to copy a copy protected DVD, it is your software causing you the problems, not the DVD unit.....This unit is perfect....

For the most part, it does what it should.
Date: 2007-08-01 | Rating: 4
I used this burner with Roxio Toast software and was happy with the results. In order to minimize "coasters" I would burn the disc to an image file on the computer first, and then burn discs from the image file. Internal drives are always better because the data isn't going through a connection like USB, but for an external DVD solution this drive from Iomega is reliable.

Life Expectancy Too Short
Date: 2007-03-10 | Rating: 3
I would have gone with a five-star review, if I had experienced a decent survivability rate. It did a great job burning DVDs and CDs, but I would get quite a few errors on some DVD burn attempts that would coaster the blank DVD. I used Roxio Media Creator Version 7+ with decent results. My DVD player in my living room was sometimes finicky when I fed it DVDs burned on this player. Then, came the fateful day when it went Tango Uniform on me after only six months of service. This would have been a five instead of a three, but hit/miss scenario with the DVD burn attempts, and the early Last Rites ritual pulled this rating down to a three. As for the one star rating in this series of reviews, all I can say is that there is a different configuration for each individual computer that rolls off an assembly shelf, so it is striclty hit or miss, and I don't think that a DVD burner carries all the responsibility for poor performance. Go ahead and get one, but if possible, but dedicate the PC it is used on strictly to burning DVDs. Also, do whatever it takes to keep the hardware and the hard drive(s) fast.

Sweet!
Date: 2004-07-13 | Rating: 5
I got mine. Ignored the fact that the other guy had a bad experience with the fan. He must have got a lemon because mine doesn't make a sound at all. Iomega will replace such things, just in case you didn't know. That's what warranties are for. I don't care much for the Iomega software though. Mine seems to hang up...might need some tweeking. But the Norton Ghost 2003 is perfect for my needs. Easy to use. It backed up my entire system in no time flat using the Windows interface.

Affordable, reliable disaster recovery and backup...
Date: 2003-11-25 | Rating: 5
Have owned this drive for about 6 weeks. Simple install in Windows XP. Iomega backup software works well. Ghost 2003 was a real bonus and works perfectly including allowing you to write to the USB Iomega in DOS as well as restore in case of disaster, first drive I've seen do that this perfectly. Backed up Ghost images of my two hard drives (about 50GB) in compressed form to the Iomega with no problems whatsoever, all while in DOS environment. If you want simple, efficient backup and off line storage, this is your solution hands down. Paid an incredible $90 for it after a rebate, you can't go wrong.

Best Bang for the Buck

80 gig's of space for alittle over a 100 dollars. I've had this for 4 months now and it works perfectly. It's quite, fast and everything I wanted and more. I don't know what these others are talking about. I use it just for storing Music ,videos and games. No problems.

Worked fine
Date: 2008-09-25 | Rating: 5
I had this drive for several years, though I rarely used it more recently. The drive was reliable for me during that period and I never had any issues with it. The drive, having been manufactured years ago and being such an old product, is much slower than most of what you can find on the market today. Nonetheless, taking into consideration when it was released and its reliability since then, I believe this drive has earned 5-stars from my experiences with it.

Great for backup
Date: 2009-01-05 | Rating: 5
I've had this drive for over five years and it has always worked perfectly. I use this for the sole purpose of managing my extensive music collection. Great buy!!!

perfect!
Date: 2007-07-11 | Rating: 5
Perfect device. Works great, stands up to me throwing it around, and was very inexpensive. I love not having to carry around another power transformer. I'm very pleased. Just wish it had a way to secure the data like the Sandisk devices do. I have to be very careful not to let this guy out of sight since there's no way to protect your data.

Nice gadget
Date: 2007-03-08 | Rating: 4
It works just like a USB flash drive, but it has a much larger capacity and better cost per megabyte. Not as portable as the 40GB version, but it still fits into a jacket internal pocket. Comes with a dual head USB cable, useful if your PC can't deliver enough current to the device.

A good product
Date: 2008-01-20 | Rating: 4
I find this product very convenient and useful. It is very small and light and holds TONS of stuff. I recently went to a foreign country and it holds all my thousands of pictures very well. It's so small, next time I travel I'll most likely take it with me so I can take more pics. The only bad thing I have found is that plugging it into my computer takes both cords and uses TWO USB plug in places (all of my available places for USB so I can't plug in my computer cooling fan or other camera devices.) The installation software was totally simple though! It's a really great product and I'd recommend it to anyone!

Just what a non-techie needs
Date: 2007-08-29 | Rating: 4
OK, I can't speak to the security features (or lack thereof) or to the product specifications. I am not a techie in the least. I bought this so that I could back up my home files and photos. I don't work for the CIA. This comes with an instructional set-up CD that is dummy-proof. The thing is ready to go in about 3 minutes. It is 100 GB so I won't out of space any time soon, even when saving lots of photos. It is a nice small silver square, and takes up very little room on my desk. It can easily be plugged and unplugged into your hard drive's USB port. You can back up your files any time the mood takes you. Its ease of use will encourage you to do that often. I use this in addition to a very small Lexar jump drive (about 2 " long) which I can use to take fewer files with me to work, or when traveling.

Easy setup
Date: 2005-08-27 | Rating: 5
This was easy to install... was up and running in a matter of minutes. It seemed noisy at first, but nothing unusual... just another hard drive running. I relocated it to under my desk and the noise is not a problem. I haven't tried the Iomega file sharing or backup software which is included. I'm using it only for storing music and accessing it with Squeezebox2 on my wireless network. It works great.

So far so good
Date: 2006-02-21 | Rating: 5
The setup was trivial. I have a 150GB Iomega drive also which has performed well without problems. I gave it 5 stars but I would give it 4.5 stars (if i could) for some minor issues: a) it is a little noisy, although I keep it in another room so it's not too bothersome for me. b) the 250GB drive does not always detect the first time (the 150GB drive always does). sometimes I have to go thru the detection process twice. so far though i've had no major problems with it.

First Impressions
Date: 2004-12-01 | Rating: 4
I recently purchased this drive after picking it over the Buffalo LinkStation 250GB. There are a lot of opinions about the LinkStation on the Web, but not any about this drive. It could be because it is a new product? Anyway, alot of people complaned about the LinkStation failing due to firmware issues, so i deceided to give Iomega a shot, not without some hesitation. I owned a Zip "click of death" drive years ago and swore I would not buy another Iomega product, oh well. Pros: os: WXP Pro 1) easy to setup. The supplied software handles mapping the network drive. 2) Included backup software, works ok for small SOHO backups. 3) Low noise level (There is one concern please see the con section). Con: 1) Lack of security settings for individual users access to folders. It seems that this drive is designed with the less technical user in mind. maybe Iomega can provided this capability via a firmware update. 2) Lack of USB 2.0 or Firewire port. This drive can only connect through Ethernet. No growth capabilities provided. 3) You can FTP to the drive except when I logged in as root my password was not accepted. I think I will investigate this further, it would be great if you could set up FTP access for different users. Again maybe a firmware update? 4) One rather disturbing thing. When I powered off and powered on with a short delay between operations a high pitch whine sound started to come from the drive. I powered off again and waited 20 minutes and powered it on again, this time the sounds from the drive were "normal". Its been on now for 24 hours+ with no abnormal noises. I contacted tech. support and they blamed this noise on a loose connection or "long" ethernet connection. Hmmm, I have it attached to a hub, with the cable that it came with, and did not touch the drive between powering off and on. I can recomend this drive if the "strange' noise doesn't mean it is going to fail. I will post after 30 days to update. It is easy to setup and use. It should basically be considered by a home user or small business that doesn't need any special NAS needs.

Review update!!!!!
Date: 2005-01-14 | Rating: 4
I have to post this under a different name. Amazon does not allow multiple reviews. anyway.... This drive performs great!!! the noise is not an issue, the speed is good, no crashes (its been on for over a month). In short this is a great drive for SOHO who doesn't want a lot of hassle with setting up and configuration. I would revise my original review to 4 1/2 stars.

a few installation 'hiccup' - updated
Date: 2005-04-29 | Rating: 4
The disk powers up fine, and I plugged it to my linksys wireless router in no time.. However, the 'iomega discovery' software which is supposed to 'discover' the disk for the user could not find from my wireless laptop... This probably comes the Cisco security agent installed on my laptop by my company, as it reporting blocking some udp signal coming from the iomega discovery software. I tried to connect physically my laptop to my router, but still coulnd't find the disk... I tried the alternate method proposed by the online help (look under 'my network places'), but this still didn't work.. Eventually, I looked into the DHCP table of my router, identified the 'new' IP adress of the disk, and was able to access it like this. The IP adress also allows to access a small web page with some configuration settings... I especially like the option allowing to power down the disk remotely. Would love to have an optin to power it up remotely ;-) Streaming of mp2 and divx works fine between this disk and my wireless B laptop. This is perfect. More documentation on the expected read/write speed, and on discovering the disk would be nice...

Excellent drive
Date: 2005-09-02 | Rating: 5
It's been a while I use this drive and I am very satisfied with it. It is fast, reliable, true plug&play install, has a wonderful backup software included and Iomega gives a great support for it if you have a problem. There was a couple of times when the drive refused to work, the head started clicking for long seconds, and stopped but later, it turned out that it was not the drive's problem, actually my USB hub (from Iogear) did not give enough power to the drive so then it started choking. Now using my new USB hub (D-Link) I never had this problem again nor if I use it directly from my laptop. Awesome product!

Easy Back Up
Date: 2005-09-17 | Rating: 5
I bought this hard drive to be a backup for my desk top and lap top. I like the fact it is self powered thru its USB connection and is small enough to take along in a Lap Top case. I would recommend this hard drive to anyone looking for backup storage.

BE VERY CAREFUL
Date: 2005-12-15 | Rating: 2
Be careful. I've spent 4 hours in 'live chat' with their technical support to make this thing work. And it won't do what I need it to do. First, be careful -- it must be plugged directly into the wall socket(it won't work plugged into a power strip) and it needs a main USB port in the back of your computer unit (front, side, or alternate USB ports won't work -- less power to alternate USB ports they said). And you have to download a 'PRO' version of the software hidden on their website in order to back-up your entire computer system. Be careful of folders within folders. Selecting individual files is very cumbersome and doesn't always capture the folders within folders. And, if you need to back-up another computer across a network -- this won't do it. According to Iomega tech support, Iomega doesn't have any product that backs up another computer over a network. Be careful. This is accurate -- but other printed things by Iomega don't pan out.

Iomega eSATA 500GB DVR Expander Drive - 34172 Iomega does it again with another simple storage device that adds storage capacity to my Tivo Series 3 HD DVR. It's simple I plugged it in rebooted and presto it worked!

Simple to set up. Works perfrectly with SA 8300 HD DVR
Date: 2009-03-06 | Rating: 5
Connects quickly. Required one reboot to recognize and format the drive and then another to ensure that it was used for recording. Quadruples the capacity of the standard Scientific Atlanta 8300HD.

Essential Accessory to a DVR
Date: 2008-12-22 | Rating: 5
DVR drives never have enough space. The Iomega DVR Expander Drive is the perfect solution to the problem. It worked like a charm right from the start and was easy to hook up by just following the instructions. We have a Scientific Atlanta 8240HDC DVR from Cox Cable, but it has an eSATA connection on the back even though that model is not supposed to have one. I called Cox to make sure the Iomega DVR Expander would work even though Iomega only advertises it to work with the 8300 series and above. Cox assured me it would work as long as my 8240 had the eSATA connection, and they were right. My storage immediately went from around 93% to 21%. We used to run out of space all the time, but so far we are still below 35% usage. The Iomega DVR Expander has made it possible to really enjoy our DVR. The Iomega has a cooling fan which makes a slight hum in the background, but it is not noticeable at all when the TV is on. One reason I ordered the Iomega rather than a competing brand was I thought the drive would run cooler and last longer because it does have a cooling fan (some brands don't) and also has an aluminum casing to help dissipate the heat from the drive. This is important because these eSATA DVR Expander drives all run constantly 24/7. Heat is the biggest enemy of long drive life, so the Iomega should last longer. You won't regret this purchase!

It works!

I purchased this to go with my Scientific Atlanta 8300 HDC Cable Box from Time Warner Cable. It works great. Just follow the instructions and you'll be able to get it up and running in no time. Great product!

Great product

Iomega DVR Expander Drive, eSATA, 500GB - 34172 I don't know what else this works with but I have the cable supplied Explorer 8300 series DVR. I'm not technically challenged but if I was this is still the easiest installation I've ever encountered. Typical DVR's are advertised as having X number of hours recording capacity (mine says 30) but if you're recording all HD that drops to somewhere around 15 hours which isn't much if you time shift a lot. With a few simple connections this memory device adds fully 60 HD hours and much more standard signal. It's controlled through the existing DVR so no hassle.

Easy, Fast and Reliable

This is a GREAT external hard drive. It's fast (7200 RPM), can stream a movie straight off it and simultaneously backup a movie with very few lag spikes. It's quiet, only hear it every once in a while when it's doing some heavy duty writing/reading. It's Reliable, haven't had a single problem with it yet. Best of all, the price is right. I wholeheartedly recommend this external drive to everyone. Just plug the usb cable and plug in the ac/adapter and you're ready to roll. In fact, I'm going to go get another one myself.

From the Mac perspective
Date: 2007-09-22 | Rating: 5
I bought this because it said it worked with OSX. I know USB is supposed to be a universal thing, but of course all us Mac junkies have had our issues here and there - even with hardware that's SUPPOSED to work. Well, no such problems here. I plugged it in, booted my computer, and the mount point appeared within 30 seconds in the Finder. The aesthetics of the product are nice - it's small, and you can stand it up so it doesn't take up much space. It's very very quiet, only a bit of 'chik chik chik' if you're moving gigabytes back and forth. And the price is oh-so-right for this much space. So if you're a Mac user and looking for some add-on storage, this is the one for you.

Nice hard drive

I didn't buy this hard drive on amazon, but thought i'd write the review. Set up is really easy, just plug the usb and the ac adapter and you are ready to go. It has a great design, a stainless steel look and a blue light in the middle that looks kind of cool. You can put it standing up or flat. Doesn't take much space. File transfer is fast. I'm not really an expert and I don't count the nanoseconds or anything, but it works for me. No problem playing video or audio from the unit. I have noticed that when I leave it on for long periods of time, it does get a little hot, but since I only use to back up files from time to time it's not really a problem. All in all, I'd say this is a good product.

A great buy!

I've been using this hard drive for over a month and I've done my best to really put it to the test. As of today, all I can say is that it works as advertised and that the price paid is way below what I would've expected. Here's my 2 cents: DESIGN The overall design is pretty slick and the brushed aluminum gives it a very futuristic look. It's very slim and will fit almost anywhere. You can use it vertically (stand included) but I'd rather use it horizontally. HEAT The hard drive WILL heat up around 40 minutes of use, at least in my case. The aluminum case will not help at all in dispersing the heat, on the contrary, it will sting a bit if you try to lift it while hot. I find that it gets less hot if used vertically. NOISE As for the noise factor, other reviews have deemed the hard drive to be noisy and that it makes clunking noises. It will make some noise, obviously, while working but I find it to be noisier if vertical. So there's a trade-off between noise and heat based on what I just wrote in the heat factor. PERFORMANCE The hard drive is a total workhorse and I love to beat the hell out of it. I've had files going to and from the hard drive while watching a 600+MB .avi movie and while burning a DVD with files from the hard drive. The movie plays without a hiccup and in my case it makes me wonder how much abuse this baby can take! I'm simply excited to have this toy in my arsenal and I fully recommend it to everyone out there. MAC EXPERIENCE I bought the hard drive to use it with Time Machine and I'm happy to say that I made the right move. TMachine will only use a sector of the HD and will let you upload and download files without any hassle to the rest of the HD... BUT once it has been formatted to be used with a Mac, you won't be able to use it with Windows. Oh, XP will detect it all right but that's as far as you'll get. Luckily I'm less PC-dependent as days go by and don't rely on the HD to move around files from PC to PC or from PC to Macs for that matter.

Awesome..

This is the best deal out there right now for a 500g external HD. It's very quick, easy to use and to integrate with Windows. I did quite a bit of research before purchasing it and it's the least expensive out there with all these variables (currently). If your looking for a solid external to manage media files; you will not be disappointed with the Iomega.

Great Product
Date: 2006-07-26 | Rating: 5
I have always used and liked the Iomega products starting with their Zip drives. The ease of use, flexibility and storage capacity have always made these products well worth the price. I use this product to back up my computer. I prefer to use the Rev Disks, which can be stored in a safe location in case of disaster. Using secondary hard drives, either external or internal, can be risky. These drives sometimes suffer mechanical breakdowns and are susceptible to the same risks as the computer, i.e. fire, water, viruses, other damage. As far as storage capacity, the Rev disks have the most storage capacity that I have seen. There are probably others out there with more, but I always try to go with known and reputable name brands. Having the high storage capacity make backups easier which, in turn, lets me do it more frequently. Using one Rev disk verses numerous CDs or DVDs, is just plain easier. If you have a hard drive larger than 35GB, then CDs and or DVDs are just too much hassle, which makes backups a nightmare. With the Rev product, it makes it soooo much easier. I highly recommend this product.
